JESSIE MCPHERSON MATERNITY – LEADERS IN PLANNED VBAC’S

WHAT IS A VBAC?

Many women who have previously had a caesarean section can safely give birth vaginally. This is commonly referred to as ‘vaginal birth after caesarean section’ or VBAC.

Every woman who has had a previous caesarean section will be assessed by their care provider to determine if it is medically advisable to go ahead with a VBAC. Women are then encouraged to consider or plan a VBAC and be offered factual information about the risks and benefits.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND RISKS OF A VBAC?

This brochure “Vaginal Birth after Caesarean Section” from The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists details the benefits and risks of VBAC.

WHERE SHOULD I GO FOR A VBAC?

If planning a VBAC, this should be conducted in a suitably staffed and equipped maternity unit, with trained staff and the appropriate equipment to monitor the mother and baby’s wellbeing continuously throughout the labour. Your hospital should have the available resources to proceed to urgent caesarean section and neonatal resuscitation, if required. (Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists 2015).
