Direct Cardioversion (DCR)

What is Direct Cardioversion?

Direct Cardioversion (DCR) is a non-invasive procedure used to restore the heart’s normal rhythm when it has become irregular due to electrical misfiring. Performed in a specialised catheterisation lab at Monash Heart Private, DCR uses a controlled electrical current to reset the heart rhythm. This procedure is done under general anaesthesia, so patients are asleep and comfortable throughout. Direct Cardioversion is also known as Electrical Cardioversion.

Why Would You Need a DCR?

Direct Cardioversion may be recommended if you have:

  • An abnormal heart rhythm, such as Atrial Fibrillation or Atrial Flutter
  • Certain types of Supraventricular Tachycardia or Ventricular Tachycardia, which cause a heart rate that is too fast

These arrhythmias can lead to uncomfortable symptoms and increase the risk of further complications. DCR helps restore a steady, normal heart rhythm, reducing these risks.

How is DCR Performed at Monash Heart Private?

At Monash Heart Private, our team of cardiologists and electrophysiologists performs DCR in the state-of-the-art catheterisation labs at the Victorian Heart Hospital.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. Preparation: You’ll be admitted as a same-day patient and shown to your private room, where you’ll meet your bedside nurse. They will guide you through preparation and answer any questions you may have about the procedure.
  2. Anaesthesia: A general anaesthetic will be administered, allowing you to sleep comfortably for the duration of the cardioversion.
  3. Procedure:
    • Large patches with sensors will be placed on your chest and sometimes on your back. These sensors act as contact points for the electrical current and help record your heart rhythm.
    • The cardioversion machine delivers a quick, low-energy shock that reaches your heart through the patches. This electric pulse causes all chambers of the heart to contract simultaneously, effectively “restarting” the heart’s electrical cycle and restoring a regular rhythm.
    • The procedure takes only a few minutes to complete, with most patients able to return home the same day.
