Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)
What is Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation?
Minimally Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), also called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), is a minimally invasive procedure to replace a narrowed aortic valve affected by aortic stenosis. This procedure allows for the implantation of a new, artificial valve to restore proper blood flow, helping alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.
Why would you need a TAVI?
- If you have a problem with your aortic valve which can manifest as symptoms of
- Breathlessness
- Chest pain (Angina)
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- You are considered too high risk for open heart surgery
How TAVI is Performed at Monash Heart Private
At Monash Heart Private, our experienced cardiologists and cardiac surgeons perform TAVI using advanced catheterisation labs within the Victorian Heart Hospital. Typically, you will stay overnight in a private room for comfort and comprehensive care.
- Preparation and Anesthesia:
- A local anesthetic is applied at the catheterisation site, often in the groin, to minimise pain. You may also receive a sedative to help you relax.
- Procedure Details: Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation is performed as a minimally invasive procedure with precision and patient comfort in mind.
- Balloon Catheter Insertion: A catheter with a small balloon is inserted into an artery, typically via the groin, and guided to the aortic valve using X-ray imaging.
- Valve Positioning: The replacement valve, attached to the catheter, is positioned directly inside the narrowed aortic valve and is supported by a stent—a flexible metal mesh.
- Valve Expansion: Depending on the valve type, it may either self-expand or be expanded with the balloon. This action pushes aside the damaged valve tissue, restoring efficient blood flow.
- Catheter Removal: The balloon is deflated, and the catheter is carefully removed, leaving the new valve securely in place.
The replacement valve can be a biologic valve (made from animal tissue) or a mechanical valve (crafted from metal or plastic). Each is designed to function like a natural heart valve, improving blood flow and relieving symptoms associated with aortic stenosis.
