Understanding Coronary Angiography (Cardiac Catheterisation)

What is Coronary Angiography (cardiac catheterisation)?

Coronary angiography is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure that uses X-ray technology to examine the coronary arteries, the blood vessels supplying the heart. Conducted in a specialised catheterisation lab, this test is one of the most precise manners of viewing and assessing possible disease within the heart.

When and why is an Angiography procedure recommended?

  • If you experience chest pain, called angina
  • After a heart attack, where the hearts blood supply is blocked
  • Diagnosing heart diseases such as Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), Abnormal Arrhythmias
  • Planning interventional or surgical procedures, such as coronary angioplasty, coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)

What to expect during a Coronary Angiography performed at Monash Heart Private?

Our team of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons at Monash Heart Private use state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities and catheterisation labs within the Victorian Heart Hospital.

Typically you will be admitted for a same day procedure, where you will be shown to your private room and meet your bedside nurse who will help you prepare for your catheterisation procedure.

When you are taken to the specialised catheterisation lab, you will be administered a local anaesthetic to the catheterisation site so you won’t feel any pain, and a sedative may be given to help you relax.

A catheter is inserted into an artery, typically in the wrist or groin, and guided to the heart under X-ray imaging, following the administration of a local anaesthetic.

A contrast dye is then injected to illuminate blood flow through the heart, allowing for clear visualisation of any narrowing or blockages in the coronary arteries. Depending on the findings, your cardiologist or cardiac surgeon may recommend additional procedures, such as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), to address any identified issues.
